First Academic Symposium on “Rural Revitalization and Integrated Urban-Rural Development” Successfully Co-Organized by Shandong University

In response to China’s rural revitalization strategy and to promote integrated urban-rural development, on September 22nd, the first academic symposium on“Rural Revitalization and Integrated Urban-Rural Development”was held. The symposium was initiated and organized by Shandong University, in collaboration with Zhejiang University, Henan Normal University, Qingdao University, and Chongqing University of Technology.

Yang Yuzhen, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Henan Normal University, and Xu Fengzeng, Director of the Service Strategy and Service Management Research Centre, and Professor of the School of Management, Shandong University, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches.

The symposium consisted of two main sessions: keynote speeches and group discussions. Hong Yinxing, former Secretary of the Party Committee of Nanjing University and distinguished economist, delivered keynote speech on the topic of “Chinese-Style Agricultural Modernization and the Development of New Quality Productive Forces”; Liu Yansui, Academician of the World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries and Director of the Key Laboratory of Regional Sustainable Development Analysis and Simulation at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered keynote speech on the topic of “Integrated Urban-Rural Development and Comprehensive Rural Revitalization”; Zhang Xun, Professor at the School of Statistics of Beijing Normal University, delivered keynote speech on the topic of “Digital Financial Development and Rural Revitalization”; Gao Fan, Chief Expert of a Major Project supported by the National Social Science Fund of China and Professor at the School of Economics of Fudan University, delivered keynote speech on the topic of "The Transformation of Agriculture, Rural Areas, and Farmers Issues and the Practical Logic of Integrated Urban-Rural Development"; Professor Xu Fengzeng delivered keynote speech on the topic of "The Translation Process of Human and Non-human Actors Moving Towards Rural Industrial Revitalization"; Gao Ming, Researcher at the Rural Economic Research Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, delivered keynote speech on the topic of“Deepening Rural Reform and Advancing Chinese-Style Modernization”; Song Bingtao, Dean of the Rural Revitalization Research Institute at Henan University and Chief Expert of a Major Project supported by the National Social Science Fund of China, delivered keynote speech on the topic of “The Cultural Connotations and Pathways of Rural Revitalization”;  and Luo Shixi, former President of Henan University of Animal Husbandry and Economy and Dean of the School of Economics and Management at Henan Institute of Science and Technology, delivered keynote speech on the topic of“Developing New Quality Agricultural Productive Forces to Drive Comprehensive Social Progress”. Yang Yuzhen and Liu Yingji, Dean of the Business School at Henan Normal University, presided over the session.

During the group discussion session, five sub-forums were held on the topics of “Rural Revitalization and Urban-Rural Integration”, “Rural Entrepreneurship and the Integrated Development of Tertiary Industries”,  “Digital Economy and Rural Development”, “Integrating Agriculture, Culture, and Tourism in Rural Areas” and“New Quality Productive Forces and Sustainable Development”. The symposium brought together scholars and editors from institutions such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fudan University, Shandong University, Beijing Normal University, and Nankai Economic Studies. Discussions centered on academic interpretations of the urban-rural development strategies outlined in the Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China . Shandong University presented four selected papers during the sub-forum sessions, including“"The Connotation, Structure, and Scale Development of the Sense of Belonging in Rural Homestays" by PhD graduate Xi Wei and PhD candidate Zhu Limin  from the School of Management;“How Rural Co-Working Spaces Foster the Formation of Entrepreneurial Ecosystems”by PhD candidate Feng Lili; "A Study on the Translation Process of Human and Non-human Actors Towards Rural Industrial Revitalization" by Master's candidate Wang Zhanyi; and "A Study on the Governance System of Rural Tourism Destinations at the County Level from the Perspective of Synergetics Theory" by Master's candidate Wu Xiangmin.

The symposium held significant importance in supporting rural revitalization and integrated urban-rural development, and reflected Shandong University’s commitment to leveraging its disciplinary and think tank strengths to contribute to the national rural revitalization strategy and integrated urban-rural development.
