Professor Victor Cui from the University of Waterloo, Canada Visited the School of Management, Shandong University

From May 20th to 22nd, Professor Victor Cui (Cui Hong), Conrad Research Excellence Chair of the University of Waterloo, Canada, was invited to the School of Management, Shandong University to participate in academic exchanges. Zhang Jianghua, Vice Dean of the School of Management, and Xu Yuehua, Director of the Department of Strategy Innovation and Entrepreneurship, hosted the activity.



From May 20th to 21st, the workshop "Research Innovation and Topical Publication" was held. Professor Cui centered on the theme of "how to meet the standards of first-class academic journals", and analyzed the "Introduction", "Theory", "Hypothesis" and "Methodology" of the paper through case studies. During the workshop, the participating teachers and students presented their research ideas or preliminarily completed papers. Professor Cui discussed the significance of the research question, the innovation and contribution of the paper with the presenters, provided customized feedback, offered insights and strategies for research innovation, and explored how to improve the quality of paper writing efficiently.



On the morning of the 22nd, Professor Cui gave an academic lecture entitled "The New Logic of Globalization: Subversion and Opportunities for Traditional Business Theory". Professor Wang Yimin, Professor Xie Jingqi, Associate Professor Tian Xiaocong, Assistant Professor Yu Du and Assistant Professor Xiao Shufeng attended the lecture. As globalization is facing the most significant challenges and changes in underlying logic since World War II, the lecture focuses on the most cutting-edge global research issues, reviews the major research results and ideas in the field, and analyzes the subversion of the basic assumptions of business theories as a result of these drastic changes; at the same time, it explores the new direction of business research brought by the new logic of globalization, including the directions, topics, and methods worthy of research. After the lecture, the participating students and faculty members had a lively discussion on the related topics.



Victor Cui (Cui Hong) is the Conrad Research Excellence Chair Professor of Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Global Strategy at the University of Waterloo, Ph.D. of Business Administration at Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia, Canada, and Ph.D. of Engineering Management at the Faculty of Engineering, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong. Professor Cui specializes in strategies for technological innovation, focusing on incentives, R&D collaboration, and intellectual property rights protection. Additionally, he is recognized as a global thought leader in guiding enterprises through complex global challenges, including geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and China and the shifting paradigms of globalization. His research has garnered international acclaim and is published in premier academic journals, including the Strategic Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS), and Research Policy. In 2023, Professor Cui published two consecutive papers in JIBS, proposing that the institutional logic of globalization is undergoing a complex change from economic orientation to security orientation, and establishing a theoretical framework to guide the response strategies of enterprises, which is one of the pioneering theoretical research in the field. He is a senior editor of International Business Review, Asia Pacific Journal of Management, Management and Organization Review, and a guest editor of JIBS. He also serves as the Chair of the Insight Development Grants Adjudication Committee (business, management, and related fields), Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Canada, and the Chair of the Annual Meeting of the Strategic Management Society of the United States, etc. His research has been reported and widely quoted in foreign media, such as Fortune and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
