From May 18th to 19th, the Fifth Forum on Management Philosophy and Organizational Ecosystem with the theme of “Chinese Traditional Culture and Modernization of Organizational Management” and the Award Ceremony of “Li Zhanxiang Outstanding Paper Award in Management Philosophy” (2024), as well as the 2024 Annual Meeting of the Chinese Management Committee of the Chinese Institute of Business Administration were held in Shandong University. With the theme, the forum focused on major issues with Chinese characteristics, such as the integration and innovation of fine traditional Chinese culture and management philosophy, and the role of traditional culture in the modernization of management, etc. Furthermore, the forum provided a platform to explore some cutting-edge topics including new quality productive forces, digitalization and AI, and practical issues of management innovation. Chen Hongwei, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Shandong University, and Huang Sujian, President of the Chinese Institute of Business Administration, attended the forum.
Deputy Secretary Chen mentioned that in line with the features of the times, the forum was closely linked to the academic frontier and adapted to the current needs. Along with peers across all sectors, Shandong University will promote all-round exchanges and cooperation, contributing Chinese management innovation wisdom to the construction of the discipline system, academic system, and discourse system of philosophy and social science with Chinese characteristics.
President Huang stated that the Chinese Institute of Business Administration will take the times as a guiding light, take roots in Chinese realities, and attach importance to the construction of China’s self-reliant management knowledge system. Participants were expected to carry out exchanges through the issues of the forum, making contributions to management practice in the new era. Wu Changqi, Dean of the School of Management, Shandong University, presided over the opening ceremony.
In the report session, Professor Zhao Fasheng from Shandong University delivered a report titled “Confucian Management Thought in the Axial Age”, which elaborated on the effectiveness of Confucianism based on the Axial Age Breakthrough Theory. Professor Liu Gang from Renmin University of China reported “The Construction of Self-reliant Knowledge System with Chinese Strategic Management Based on the Art of War”, and pointed out that strategy is the comprehensive way to take a panoramic view of the situation, adapt to changes, and turn danger into safety. Professor Xu Yuehua from Shandong University gave a lecture entitled “When Tradition Meets Modernity - Traditional Management Thoughts and Strategic Behaviour of Chinese Corporate”, discussing the embodiment of fine traditional Chinese culture in Chinese policy and the management research on Chinese culture in top journals at home and abroad. Professor Zhang Yan from Peking University gave a speech on “Current Status and Future Direction of Research in the Field of Paradoxical Leadership Behaviour”, systematically introducing the effects and mechanisms of paradoxical leadership at the individual, team, and organizational levels, as well as the direction of future research. Professor Cheng Jin from Xiamen University exchanged views with Professor Zhang on the difference between paradoxical leadership behaviour and contingency leadership behaviour, the necessity of paradoxical leadership behaviour, etc. Professor Sun Xinbo from Northeastern University presented “Thinking about AI Enabled Management Innovation Based on Value Co-creation from the Perspective of New Quality Productive Forces”, in which he elaborated on the evolutionary laws of value co-creation, four phases of AI development, and AI-enabled management innovation. Professor Li Donghong from Tsinghua University engaged in a deep discussion with Professor Sun on how traditional culture can be integrated with AI. Professor Liu Songbo from Renmin University of China, and Professor Jiao Hao from Beijing Normal University, moderated the session.
At the Award Ceremony, Emeritus Professor Yang Xianju from Renmin University of China gave an introduction to the outstanding contributions made by Professor Li Zhanxiang in talent training, teaching innovation, and academic research, etc. Zhang Zelin, Associate Dean of the Business School, Renmin University of China, announced the list of Outstanding Papers. Deputy Secretary Chen Hongwei, Professor Liu Gang, Deputy Director Li Yifei of Editorial Department of Management World, Deputy Director Qin Yi of Editorial Department of China Industrial Economics, Representative Ma Heshan of Baomao Group, Associate Editor Zhan Wenjie of Chinese Journal of Management, Vice Dean Tang Guiyao of the School of Management, Shandong University, and Professor Liu Songbo, presented awards to winners.
The forum was composed of a number of parallel forums, such as "Forum on Innovative Practice of Corporate Management", "Forum on Management Philosophy", and "Forum on Contradictory Management", and 10 parallel sub-forums for paper reports.
The forum was co-hosted by the Business School of Renmin University of China, the School of Management of Shandong University, and the Chinese Management Committee of the Chinese Institute of Business Administration, organized by the School of Management of Shandong University, Center for Management Philosophy and Organizational Ecosystem (MPOE) of Renmin University of China, the Department of General Management of Business School of Renmin University of China, and the Research Institute of Chinese Management Thoughts of Dongbei University of Finance and Economics, and co-organized by Baomao Group, Telchina Group Co., LTD., and Management Philosophy Research Center of Renmin University of China.
