On May 18th, the Fifth Forum on Management Philosophy and Organizational Ecology with the theme of “Chinese Traditional Culture and Modernization of Organizational Management” and the Award Ceremony of “Li Zhanxiang Outstanding Paper Award in Management Philosophy” (2024) were held, as well as the 2024 Annual Meeting of the Chinese Management Committee of the Chinese Institute of Business Administration. Professor Xin Jie and doctoral student Zhang Xin of the School of Management, Shandong University won the 5th Li Zhanxiang Outstanding Paper Award in Management Philosophy for the paper “Takes Benevolence and Filial Piety as the Foundation: The Originating Mechanism and the Sequence Evolution Path of Corporate Social Responsibility - Taking Chambroad Group as an Example”.
The paper embodies the management philosophy and management thought: the core and key point of Chinese traditional culture is to return to the ontology of “Tao”, “Conscience” and “Consciousness”, and follow the logical path from ontology to cognition to methodology. In Confucianism, it is to “study deep into the root of the matter; dig into the heart of fact to find the correct answer and knowledge; be open, honest and truthful without deception or hypocrisy; maintain a true heart and get away with evil thinking; develop our own self, thinking, and behavior; keep the family in a harmonious environment with proper respect to individual members; rule the country peacefully with education and good governmental policies; and rule the whole world in a peaceful manner with good ruling policies”. And in Taoism, it is “Out of Tao, One is born; Out of One, Two; Out of Two, Three; Out of Three, the created universe.” Chambroad takes benevolence and filial piety as the foundation, uses the foundation to generate specific corporate social responsibility (CSR) behaviors and CSR mechanisms, and fulfills its CSR through the evolutionary path of “Honoring Leaders - Fulfilling Employees - Supporting Partners - Benefiting Society”. Through the three internal mechanisms of “mental model embedding - trust network embedding - symbiotic value embedding”, the concept of “taking benevolence and filial piety as the foundation” is embedded in the fulfillment process of CSR, reflecting the everlasting cultural efficacy. The paper interprets the Chinese CSR fulfillment program as "The gentleman devotes his attention to the basic of things. When he has mastered the basics, he will find the Way". Compared with the previous research of the Western stakeholder paradigm based on the philosophy of dichotomy, it reshapes the cognition and practice of social responsibility with the originating mechanism and the sequence evolution path of the Chinese cultural wisdom, and depicts a picture of the contradictory relationship between “master” and “guest” and “self-interest” and “altruism” in the CSR fulfillment. It responds to Professor Li Zhanxiang’s important initiative of using “contradiction analysis” to construct management research in China.
The Center for Management Philosophy and Organizational Ecosystem (MPOE) of Renmin University of China pursues the concept of honoring commitment and taking practical actions, is rooted in enterprise practice and is committed to integrating the wisdom of Chinese and Western management to inherit the governance spirit of the older generation of management scholars represented by Professor Li Zhanxiang, etc. It explores the major issues of Chinese enterprises from the philosophical perspective and endeavors to construct a theoretical system of enterprise management with Chinese characteristics, contributing to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
