Professor Meng Qingfeng of Jiangsu University Gave an Academic Lecture

On November 23rd, at the invitation of the Department of Project Management and Industrial Engineering, School of Management of Shandong University, Professor Meng Qingfeng of Jiangsu University gave an online academic lecture on the topic of “Strong Correlation Mechanism of Safety Risks in Engineering Sites - Based on the Perspective of Complex System Management”. The lecture is one of the series of lectures by famous experts of the School, hosted by Assistant Professor Xue Hong.

The lecture explored the engineering site safety issues facing China. In 2022, the total output value of China’s construction industry reached 312,000 RMB, an increase of 6.5% year-on-year, and the status of the pillar industry of the national economy continues to be consolidated. As the rapid development of China’s engineering construction, engineering sites have repeatedly exposed safety problems, and even major safety accidents are still occurring.

Professor Meng pointed out that the endless safety accidents are attributed to human unsafe behaviors, which are affected by multiple factors and are typically complex management problems. Starting from the research problem of the strong association mechanism of safety risk in engineering sites - based on the perspective of complex system management, he explored the formation mechanism of construction workers’ unsafe behaviors, behavioral evolution, behavioral control, and other individual behaviors, to the behavioral chain association mechanism, the risk chain association mechanism and the early warning mechanism of construction workers’ unsafe behaviors. The study points out that the unsafe behaviors of construction workers are in line with the thinking and research paradigm of complex system management.

Meng Qingfeng is a professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Management, Jiangsu University, one of the Jiangsu Province “Outstanding Youth in Social Sciences” and “Qinglan Project” Excellent Teachers, a member of the Engineering Management Branch of the Society of Management Science and Engineering of China, and a director of the Complexity Management Branch of the Chinese Society of Technology Economics. He has presided over several research programs, such as General Programs and Youth Programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and published more than 50 papers as the first author in journals such as IJPE, IJPR, Journal of Management Sciences in China, Systems Engineering-Theory & Practice, Chinese Journal of Management Science, Journal of Systems Engineering, etc. He was awarded the third prize of the 15th and 16th Jiangsu Excellent Achievement Award in Philosophy and Social Sciences and the second prize of the Jiangsu Applied Research Excellence Project Award in Social Sciences.
