Professor Li Donghui of Shenzhen University and Tenured Professor George Shan of the Business School of the University of Western Australia Gave an Academic Lecture

On the afternoon of October 30th, Li Donghui, Professor of Shenzhen University, and George Shan, Tenured Professor of the Department of Accounting and Finance of the Business School of the University of Western Australia, were invited to give an academic lecture to the School of Management. The lecture is one of the series of Lectures by Famous Experts of the School. Professor Zhang Yuming hosted the lecture.




Professor Li gave an academic report entitled “US Governmental Sanctions and Financing Constraints of the Chinese Firms”, which introduced the impact of the US governmental sanctions on the financing of Chinese enterprises under the background of the trade war. He discussed and answered the questions raised by the students during the presentation. After the report, Professor Zhang summarized the topic and content of future research and encouraged students to take into account the current hot issues in society and actively respond to General Secretary Xi Jinping’s call to “write the paper on the land of the motherland”, contributing to the development of China’s management.


Focused on the research “Do students have satisfying experiences of education at sustainable universities? Evidence from Australian Universities”, Professor Shan explained the research idea, data selection, and possible limitations of the paper, and discussed with the students and teachers. Combined with the content of his paper, he explained the logic of writing an empirical paper, the importance of the theoretical foundation, and the specific application of empirical methods, stressing that the theoretical foundation of a paper and the empirical analysis determine the quality of the paper’s contribution together. The only way to make an academic paper convincing is to have a solid theoretical foundation and make a clear research idea.




Li Donghui is a distinguished professor and doctoral supervisor of Shenzhen University and the director of the Professor Committee of the College of Economics of Shenzhen University. His academic papers have been published in top international journals of finance, including the Journal of Finance (UTD24, FT50), Journal of International Business Studies (UTD24, FT50), and Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis (FT50). He has also published several papers in key authoritative Chinese academic journals, including Economic Research Journal and Journal of Management World. He serves as an expert in the evaluation of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the MOE (Ministry of Education) Foundation on Humanities and Social Sciences. He has presided over two General Programs of the NSFC and participated in one Key Program of the NSFC. He was awarded the Shenzhen Overseas High-level “Peacock Plan” Program Talent, Expert of the Shenzhen News Think Tank of Shenzhen Newspaper Group, and was appointed as an expert of the High-level Title Evaluation Committee, Shenzhen Municipal Finance Bureau.


George Shan is a tenured professor and doctoral supervisor in the Department of Accounting and Finance of the Business School, the University of Western Australia. Professor Shan, Chartered Accountant, Certified Public Accountant, and Certified Management Accountant in Australia, has worked at several high-level universities including the University of South Australia, the University of Ballarat, the University of Adelaide, and the University of Rome Tor Vergata. His research areas include corporate governance and related topics in the fields of accounting, finance, and management. In recent years, he has published more than 20 academic journal papers in internationally recognized journals, including Journal of Business Ethics, International Review of Financial Analysis, Finance Research Letters, Australian Journal of Management, Corporate Governance: An International Review, Emerging Markets Review, and Family Business Review.
